Barunga’s Next Top Model 2025
A Love Letter to Barunga
Each year, the Barunga Festival draws people from across the Northern Territory and beyond to celebrate culture, community and creativity on the dusty red earth of Bagala country. For many, it’s more than just a festival; it’s a pilgrimage.
This year, Barunga Festival saw the debut of Barunga’s Next Top Model, a vibrant fashion project spotlighting the talents of emerging Indigenous models and creatives from across the Territory. I had the privilege of contributing to the event, stitching part of a bold, beautiful collection that came alive on the catwalk.
The runway featured a stunning cast of first-time and returning models, including:
Tyson Ryan (Maningrida)
Cedella (Yarrabah/Cairns)
Miley Cunningham (Wurrimiyanga)
Shenala Taylor (Kununurra)
Davina Puruntatameri (Milikapiti)
Mia (Pirlangimpi/Darwin)
Iesah (Darwin)
Columbiere Tipungwuti (Milikapiti)
Jaida Fejoo (Darwin)
Jaydon Black (Pirlangimpi)
The collection celebrated the power of collaboration, featuring fabrics and accessories from renowned Aboriginal art centres including Injalak Arts, Jilamara Arts, Merrepen Arts, Pirlangimpi Women’s Centre, and Gapuwiyak Arts Centre. Special mention to House of Darwin, Alice, Grace Fox, Dave Blake and the ever-wonderful Cassie Black.
